Maryland University students did just that last year! In 2013, the Maryland University fashion students came up with the idea for a new annual show called Condom Couture Fashion Show.

The Condom – It’s not just about Men. History of The Femidom

The female condom, known also as the femidom, still stays in the shadow of its male equivalent. How does the femidom work?

Technically speaking it’s a thin, soft, loose-fitting sheath with a flexible ring at each end. WRAPPING IT UP: The History of Condoms. Episode I. The Beginnings.

 

The history of condoms goes back many ages and starts in ancient times. Originally, as today, condoms were used as a method of birth control and as a protective measure against sexually transmitted diseases. Throughout the history of use, condoms have been made from a variety of materials and subject to numerous and sometimes controversial experiments.

        

 

The oldest pictorial sign of condom use has been found in the French cave Grotte des Combarrelles and is as old as 12.000 – 15.000 years.

Within well-documented civilizations such as The Egyptians, Greeks & Romans there is some evidence of practicing a variety of birth control methods.

 

In these societies, it seems that birth control was seen as entirely a woman’s responsibility and the only preserved documentation describes female-control devices. Some of them more effective (pessaries), the other rather symbolic in value (amulets).

Another theory claims that loincloths worn by Greek and Egyptian labourers, sometimes consisting of just a little more than a covering for the glans of a penis, were used also by men in higher class as a protection during the sexual intercourse.

After the decline of the Roman Empire contraceptives fell out of use in Europe, until around the 15th century and the new epoque of Renaissance. Prior to that time use of glans condoms (the ones covering just the head of a penis) has been recorded in Asia. In China, glans condoms have been made from oiled silk paper & lamb intestines and in Japan, evidence suggests the use tortoise shells and animal horn devices.

Kama Sutra – The Book of Love
